Oracy

Empowering children to speak confidently, listen carefully and communicate with purpose.

Oracy

Overview

Our oracy curriculum helps children use spoken language to think, learn and connect with others. We believe every child’s voice should be heard, valued and supported, and that strong communication skills build confidence across the curriculum and beyond.

How we teach

Children learn explicit oracy skills such as storytelling, presenting, questioning and debating. Classrooms use discussion guidelines, talk tactics and sentence stems to support purposeful talk. Pupils work in pairs, small groups and whole-class settings, practising skills such as clarifying, building on ideas, challenging respectfully and summarising. Teachers model effective communication and give regular feedback.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, pupils can express ideas clearly, listen actively and adapt their talk for different audiences and purposes. They use rich vocabulary, speak with confidence and collaborate thoughtfully in discussions, supporting both their learning and relationships.

How you can help at home

Have regular conversations about your child’s day, ask open questions and encourage them to explain their thinking. Share stories together, take turns speaking and listening and give children opportunities to express opinions.
