Design & Techology

Practical, problem-solving projects that help children design, create and evaluate with purpose.

Design & Techology

Overview

Our DT curriculum develops children’s creativity, imagination and practical skills through purposeful design projects. Pupils learn how products are made, how to solve problems and how to create functional solutions that improve everyday life.

How we teach

Children follow the design process: researching, planning, creating and evaluating. Projects include food technology, construction, mechanisms, textiles and electrical systems. Teachers introduce technical skills progressively and encourage children to test and refine their ideas, working safely with tools and materials.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, pupils can design products with clear intentions, use tools accurately and evaluate their work based on criteria. They understand how design meets real needs and can apply problem-solving strategies with growing independence.

How you can help at home

Encourage hands-on activities like cooking, building or fixing things together. Talk about how everyday items are designed and ask your child how they might improve them.
