Literacy

Our literacy curriculum helps children become confident readers, enthusiastic writers and expressive speakers.

Literacy

Overview

We choose high-quality texts that spark curiosity, broaden vocabulary and give children meaningful reasons to read, write and talk. Through a rich diet of stories, poems and non-fiction, pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to communicate clearly and enjoy language for life.

How we teach

Phonics is taught systematically every day in the EYFS and Key Stage 1 using the Twinkl Phonics scheme, ensuring children build secure decoding skills from the start. Where needed, phonics continues into Key Stage 2 to support confidence and fluency. Reading is taught through individual reading, guided groups and whole-class book study, giving children regular opportunities to discuss texts and develop comprehension.

Writing is taught through engaging contexts linked to class books, helping pupils plan, draft, edit and improve their work while learning grammar and spelling in meaningful ways. Oracy sits at the heart of literacy, with children using talk to explore ideas, build understanding and rehearse language.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, pupils read accurately, fluently and with understanding across a wide range of texts. They can explain vocabulary, infer meaning and discuss authors’ choices. Their writing shows clear structure, varied sentence types, accurate punctuation and increasingly ambitious vocabulary. They use talk effectively to express opinions, justify ideas and respond thoughtfully to others. Most importantly, pupils leave Ivydale with confidence in their literacy skills and a genuine enjoyment of reading and writing.

How you can help at home

Read with your child every day and talk about the story, characters and new vocabulary. Encourage them to write regularly — shopping lists, letters, diary entries or creative stories. Support phonics using the sounds taught in school and help your child practise weekly spellings. Visit the library together and model a love of books by sharing what you enjoy reading too.
