Maths

Our maths curriculum builds strong number foundations and helps children think mathematically with confidence and curiosity.

Maths

Overview

Through a mastery approach, pupils learn to make connections, spot patterns and apply their knowledge to new situations. Lessons are designed to ensure all children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills that prepare them for the next stage of learning and everyday life.

How we teach

Maths is taught using White Rose Maths, ensuring clear progression from year to year. Lessons follow small, carefully sequenced steps supported by practical resources, models and images that deepen children’s conceptual understanding. Pupils engage in reasoning, investigations and structured practice to secure learning. Times tables are prioritised, with regular rehearsal to build automaticity. Teachers use assessment to identify gaps and adapt teaching so every child is well supported and appropriately challenged.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, pupils calculate with accuracy, reason using mathematical language and solve multi-step problems with increasing independence. They understand place value, fractions, decimals and percentages, and can choose efficient methods for calculations. They are able to explain their thinking clearly, justify strategies and apply maths confidently in different contexts, both in and beyond the classroom.

How you can help at home

Practise times tables regularly in short bursts using online games or quick-fire questions. Talk about maths in everyday life — measuring ingredients, comparing prices, reading timetables or calculating change. Encourage your child to explain their methods and check their answers. Use the weekly calculation activity to help reinforce fluency and build confidence.
