Our Approach to learning

At Ivydale, we believe children learn best when they feel curious, confident and inspired.

How we teach

Our approach to learning is rooted in high-quality teaching, rich experiences and meaningful opportunities to talk, think and explore.

We build strong foundations in reading, writing and maths while ensuring every subject plays a vital role in developing the whole child.

Learning at Ivydale is active, purposeful and connected.

Children learn through high-quality texts, hands-on investigation, practical problem-solving and structured talk. We encourage pupils to question, collaborate and reflect, helping them develop confidence in their own ideas and an understanding of how they learn. Teachers use evidence-informed practice, careful modelling and clear progression to ensure every child is supported and challenged.

We want every pupil to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will stay with them for life — curiosity, independence, resilience and a love of learning.

Three foundations for every learner

Literacy for Life

We build confident readers and writers through high-quality phonics, rich texts and a balanced approach to reading and writing. Children develop secure decoding, strong comprehension and the skills to write with accuracy, purpose and creativity.

Maths for life

Our maths curriculum strengthens core number skills while developing reasoning and problem-solving.

Following White Rose Maths plans and using models that support understanding, children learn to think mathematically with confidence.

Our Wider Curriculum

Specialist teaching, engaging topics and rich experiences help children apply skills across the curriculum. From music and Spanish to swimming and chess, pupils broaden their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the world.
